Nail Problems & treatment

  • Ingrown nails

An ingrown toenail results from the nail growing into the skin around it. This often occurs at either

edge of the big toe. They can be hereditary. These most commonly develop on one or both sides of the big toenail. The cause is either incorrect cutting of the nail or the shape of the nail constantly irritates the skin along the nail edge.

Treatment

An ingrown nail can often be relieved just by careful cutting of the nail edge by our Podiatrist's.  If needed, we can perform a minor operation with local anesthetic to permanently cure the problem. In general you can return to work or school that day or the day after with minimal pain.

  • Fungal nails

Living in dark, warm and moist environments, fungi can enter through tiny cuts or separations between your nail and the nail bed. Once the infection begins, you may notice a small white or yellow spot on your nail. As the nail fungus spreads, your nail may become discoloured, thich & even develop crumbling edges. For most people the concern is due to the appearance. It can be a more serious problem in people with diabetes.

Treatment
Application of topical solutions (but have a low success rate & require ongoing treatment) & oral medication (which can be effective but has potential side effects in the liver). Surgical removal of the nail.
